KEELAND AND MIKAELA'S ICONIC CITY WEDDING

Black Tie Wedding Attire

Minimalist and effortlessly elegant, Keeland and Mikaela got married in Sydney’s iconic Queen Victoria Building. For Keeland’s black tie wedding we decided to keep it timeless and clean, we designed a custom black tuxedo that complemented the sophisticated nature of Mikalela’s wedding dress. The result was better than we could’ve imagined.

Enjoy the conversation and the beautiful moments gracefully captured by Matt Godkin.

What was the most memorable moment of the wedding day?

Personally, the most memorable moment was leaving the rings at home. I had to send my best man back in an uber to pick them up for me, thankfully he made it back in time for the ceremony with 10 minutes to spare!

Tell us about your engagement story?

I had Mikaela’s engagement ring custom made by Holly Ryan Jewellery, the gold of the ring was made of recycled gold from Mikaela’s late mother’s jewellery. Through my own disorganisation it took me a year to get the ring from idea to in my hand. I couldn’t wait another second to ask the question.

The next time I saw Mikaela she had just come home from a big day at work. It was raining cats and dogs, howling wind and I had decided that today was the day. Despite her protests I dragged her off for a sunset swim at Gunnamatta Bay in Cronulla, where we frequently swim. Walking down in just my speedos with the ring tied into the drawstring, we arrived to a choppy hightide.

We stood in waist deep water, I quickly faced away and tried to retrieve the ring without dropping it to be forever lost. As I turned and dropped the knee, I realised the water was too deep to kneel. At a half crouch, ring held above the water, choppy waves lapping over my head. She said yes.

What was the dress code of your wedding and how did you decide it?

To be completely honest, we didn’t trust some of our wedding guests to dress appropriately with an unclear dress code. We went with Black-tie as it was clear and would keep the gentlemen generally in dark suits. This was part of a bigger conversation that also aligned our venue, how we wanted our guests to present and most importantly how we wanted to feel on the day.

What was the best part of getting your custom wedding suit made and why?

I had many ideas for how I wanted my suit to look, from a classic black, suit and tie to some more flamboyant options, I actually shopped around quite a lot. After growing frustrated with the style and fit of many high end brands, I wasted weekends going shopping and not liking any of the options. I decided that I would just go get my suit made exactly as I wanted it.

The best part was having someone knowledgeable Belance’s head designer (Charlie), have a conversation with me about what I was looking for, what I wanted for my wedding day and not just trying to sell me whatever was in stock. After we figured out what I wanted, the fitting process was quick, maybe ten or fifteen minutes. I mostly just stood there and drank a beer while Charlie did his thing.

If you could give one piece of advice, it would be…

We made some decisions that made the night more special for us, I would highly recommend them to anyone.

The wedding and reception were at the same venue, we walked out after the ‘I do’s’, simultaneously the bar opened behind our guests. We had photos taken while running around the QVB for twenty minutes and then came back fashionably late for our own party. While this was a great experience for our guests with no down time or commute to worry about, it also helped us relax as we knew our guests were in good hands. Not to mention we only had to deal with one vendor during the entire process, this kept costs down and the two of us stress free in the lead up to the big day.

What is your favourite photo from the day and why?

I love this photo by Matt Godkin. It shows off the unmistakably QVB tilework, shows the motion of the two of us, simple clean and just us.
